Reformer Pilates · Harbor Row

Small classes.
Long spines.

Ten reformers in a daylit loft on Harbor Row. Classes cap at ten and most run eight, so by your second visit the instructor knows which shoulder you favor.

Classes

Four classes.
One method.

Everyone starts in Foundations, including people who have done Pilates for years. It takes two classes to learn our reformers. After that the whole schedule opens up.

01

Reformer Foundations

The machine, explained. Springs, carriage, footbar, straps, and the seven movements every other class is built on. Slow on purpose.

Your first visit

Five things
before you come.

  1. Grip socks.

Required on the reformers. Any pair with rubber on the sole works. We keep them at the desk for $14 if yours are in the other bag.

  2. Arrive fifteen minutes early.

Ten, after the first time. On your first visit an instructor walks you through the carriage, the springs, and how to get on and off without a bruise. It takes eight minutes and it changes the class.

  3. Tell us about your body.

Backs, knees, wrists, shoulders, a pregnancy, a surgery, the thing that only hurts on Tuesdays. Say it at the desk or quietly to the instructor. The springs change, the cues change, and the class gets better for you.

  4. Wear something close to the body.

Straps catch on loose shorts. Leggings and a fitted top are the uniform for a reason. Jewelry lives in the locker.

  5. Book Foundations first.

Two Foundations classes before Flow, whoever you are. People who have done Pilates for a decade still learn something about our springs. Then the whole schedule is yours.

Instructors

Six people
who watch your feet.

Every instructor here holds a comprehensive certification, teaches at most four classes a day, and takes someone else's class once a week. That is the rule, and it is why the cueing sounds the same from Maren on Monday to Hana on Sunday.

Maren Holt

Director · Comprehensive, 600 hrs

Opened Reformer in 2018 after nine years teaching in other people's studios. Runs Foundations like a language class: one word at a time.

Tomas Reyes

Comprehensive · Former dancer

The 6:30 Flow is his. Expects you to breathe on the count and will wait, pleasantly, until you do.

Priya Anand

Comprehensive · Pre and postnatal

Half her Wednesday privates are in the second trimester. The other half are new parents finding their core again.

June Okafor

Comprehensive · Rehab focus

Works alongside two local physios and reads their notes before your class. The person to see after a back.

Elliot Sands

Reformer and Mat · Strength coach

Heavier springs, longer holds. Saturday Flow fills first every week and it is entirely his fault.

Hana Kimura

Mat and Reformer · Mat program lead

Built the Mat schedule and teaches the slow Sunday class. Thinks the reformer is a very good mat.

Why reformer

The springs do something
a mat cannot.

Joseph Pilates built the first reformer out of a hospital bed and a set of springs. A century on, the idea has not needed improving, only good light and a studio that keeps the classes small.

01 Resistance in both directions.

A spring loads the movement going out and coming back. The muscle works the whole way, and the small stabilizers, the ones that quit first on a mat, do not get to sit out.

02 Support, not shortcuts.

The carriage takes your bodyweight so the joints can move without being asked to hold you up. That is why physios send people here, and why a first class can feel easier than it is.

03 Progress you can count.

Springs are numbers. Two reds in October, three by February, a blue on the footwork by spring. Nobody has to guess whether it is working.
